It’s a modern-day version of Marco Polo’s journey halfway around the world – but who’s handling the steering wheel?

A team of Italian engineers have launched what has been billed as the longest test drive yet of driverless vehicles: a 13 000km, three-month road trip from Italy to China, not in search of silk, but to test the limits of future automotive technology.

That’s right. There’s augmented reality on your iPhone, elephants filming documentaries and now driverless cars. Well then boys and girls. It seems we are now fully immersed in 21st century. better get that seatbelt on.

The new breed

In the fight against global warming the automotive industry is moving as one towards a better future. VW are claiming to be in first position when the race starts to hot up, and I’ll be keeping my eye on their progress. Below is a working model of one of their designs.
